St. Paul - Grand Ave

A very robust economic revitalization plan has had a very positive affect on the St. Paul/East Metro Area and the impact is one that will be felt for decades to come. Newer, major development projects such as the construction of the RiverCentre, Xcel Energy Center and the Science Museum of Minnesota are all new editions to the East Metro community and have served to make the many homes in neighborhoods in this part of town highly sought after properties. With its well-known businesses and recreational opportunities found along Grand Avenue combined with the area’s reputation for having a strong education system to go along with a unique public transportation network, this part of Dakota County has become an attractive place for locals to live, work and play.

Every year, the city kicks off summer with the annual Grand Old Day celebration. The event takes place on Grand Avenue and features activities for people of all ages to enjoy such as a battle of the bands, various sporting events, a family fun area, festival and beer gardens, the Grand Old Day Parade, and over 150 outdoor food and merchandise vendors. Grand Old Day is just one of many community events that occur on this avenue each year. Others include the Grand Meander, Art of Grand, Boo Bash, Paws on Grand and the Taste of Grand: Restyled. The already busy avenue truly becomes abuzz when the entire community unites but the good news is it doesn’t take a special event here on Grand Avenue to get people to line the sidewalks.

Grand Avenue is a shopper’s paradise and for those who love to window shop, there’s no better destination in the Twin Cities Area to take a long stroll along 30 blocks of storefronts. Behind Grand Avenue rests several large residential communities that benefit from the economic prosperity that Grand Avenue has brought to the area. Homes in this part of St. Paul are both attractive and affordable. The cityscape makes for a unique backdrop in the Land of 10,000 Lakes as most tend to think they’ll be overwhelmed by Mother Nature when residing in Minnesota. However, life in the Twin Cities and especially in white hot districts such as Grand Avenue offers the perfect blend of urbane with the right mix of lush greenery, deep blue waters and open spaces. A variety of neighborhood parks and playgrounds are scattered throughout this part of town, as are elementary, middle and high schools. Several colleges and universities also have campuses in the area with one, Macalester College, being located directly on Grand Avenue. The largest university in the area is the University of Minnesota in nearby Minneapolis while schools like Hamline University, Metropolitan State University, Saint Paul College and Concordia University are all situated in St. Paul.

For those living near Grand Avenue in St. Paul, employment opportunities abound. The area has a wealth of diverse businesses, from manufacturing to those in medical technology that have the ability to employ any skill level. The strongest demand for workers remains in healthcare support, healthcare practitioners and technical occupations. Other high demand fields include business and financial operations, computer and mathematical, and arts, design, entertainment and media relations. With such an arrangement of jobs, residents of all skill sets have an opportunity to find work which is one reason why the state of Minnesota, along with Colorado and Virginia, led the nation in personal income growth in 2000 and 2001. Today, wages continue to steadily increase with the latest statistical report showing a 14.6 percent growth in Dakota Country wages from 2005 to 2006.

In addition to being afforded the many amenities Grand Avenue offers, those living in the East Metro Area of St. Paul also benefit from being near the State Capitol Building, a host of historical sites, the Minnesota History Center and several arenas and stadiums for professional sports teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins and Wild. St. Paul is also home to one of the most famous minor-league baseball teams, the St. Paul Saints. The blend of new, massive sports venues combined with the rich and historic architecture of decades past makes St. Paul very unique. Mix in the ability to work, live and play all within walking distance to your home and its obvious to see why so many seek to reside in one of the many neighborhoods that border Grand Avenue in downtown St. Paul.
